MEDICUBEX CASE – A reliable partner plays a vital role in supporting development process

Recent news, articles & releases

Outwardly, the device looks like a conventional office soundproof telephone booth. In reality, it’s an autonomous health self-measurement station, empowering users to independently assess their numerous fundamental vital signs and identify risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. This is Medicube X™ eHealth Station developed by health technology startup MedicubeX, in close cooperation with the health technology company Innokas Medical.

From idea to product manufacturing

The development of the self-measuring station is an ideal example of the services and expertise offered by Innokas Medical. Innokas Medical is one of the leading Nordic companies specializing in health technology, medical software, and healthcare digitalization. The company offers various design and manufacturing services to its customers.

"Our primary focus is on collaborating with our customers to drive the development, design, and manufacturing of a diverse range of medical devices and In-Vitro diagnostic devices," says Jenni Tuulos, Director of Design Studio at Innokas Medical.

Innokas Medical’s portfolio encompasses a wide spectrum of devices, ranging from individual sensors to complex imaging systems. Moreover, software solutions based on artificial intelligence are constantly increasing due to the demand.

"We collaborate with both health technology startups and established international players. Our expertise spans comprehensive project execution, encompassing the entire journey from ideation to product manufacturing and ongoing maintenance services. Whether assisting at any stage of device development or lifecycle, our dedicated team ensures timely support aligned with the specific needs of our customers. From crafting proof-of-concept prototypes to facilitate market testing, to seamlessly transitioning into subsequent phases for productizing fully-fledged medical devices. For example, we support startups like MedicubeX in expanding their business," Tuulos says.

Cooperation brings numerous benefits

The product development and manufacturing of health technology is strictly regulated. Therefore, it’s important to choose a reliable partner for product development who knows the industry, finds the right technological solutions, and is familiar with the special requirements in the industry.

Software integration in medical devices is on the rise; however, quick production and development present challenges even for major software companies that lack prior experience with srict quality system regulations specific to medical devices. Navigating the complexities of compliance within this regulated industry demands a unique understanding and adherence to robust quality systems, posing a significant hurdle for companies transitioning into the medical technology space. Innokas Medical has this kind of software expertise.

Innokas Medical has helped MedicubeX in the development of the self-measuring station by conceptualizing the device and carrying out product feasibility studies in the pilot phase. According to MedicubeX's CEO, physician Vili Kostamo, the cooperation with Innokas Medical has brought several benefits, including speeding up the development of the device and its market introduction – not forgetting the quality requirements and regulations of the industry.

"Innokas Medical has a long history in the industry, so they have profound capabilities and expertise in multidisciplinary regulatory support all the way to device productization. For example, a small start-up company couldn’t hire more than one lawyer, but Innokas Medical has many professionals familiar with the subject area who act as consultants in the project," says Kostamo.

MedicubeX's CE-marked self-measuring station became available for patient use for the City of Helsinki in March.

"The self-measuring station will also have new features when it is certified as a medical device later this year. Cooperation with Innokas Medical will continue with the certification work," Kostamo concludes with a smile.
