Healthcare technology is one of the largest high-tech export segments of Finnish industry, and the industry continues to grow strongly. According to the latest export report published by Healthtech Finland in the spring, the exports of the Finnish health technology reached again a new record.
Healthcare technology is still one of the fastest growing high-tech segments of Finnish industry. The exports of the Finnish health technology reached a new record again in 2018 as the value of Finland’s exports of health technology products rose to €2.3 billion, an increase of 3.4% over the prior year. Nowadays the industry directly employs over 12,000 people in Finland.
“Over the past 20 years, health technology has brought nearly €12 billion to Finland's foreign trade”, tells Saara Hassinen, Managing Director at Healthtech Finland.
Most of the healthcare products manufactured in Finland are exported, but according to Healthtech Finland’s survey, the companies still have the desire and need to develop their solutions in Finland.
“Research and development in Finland brings new health technology solutions into patient care. It also influences cost-efficiency and effectiveness of future health care. At the same time, these companies promote growth and investments in Finland”, Hassinen explains.
The strongest growth was seen in the In Vitro Diagnostics segment, comprising both diagnostic reagents and equipment. In 2018, exports in the In Vitro Diagnostics segment rose to €597 million by 4,7 percent. The traditionally strong Medical Equipment segment covering up to 71 percent of total Finnish health technology exports grew by 3,2 percent to €1617 billion.
